This is one of my favorite shots in the film, because you can catch all the Ottoman family dynamics in just a few seconds: dad is oblivious, his son is carefree, and mom is ever-vigilant for calamity. The Scarab is, as always, lumbering.
Animator Sam Wilson was a force of nature on this one, handling all four of the foreground characters and the mech. It’s the kind of shot you can only pull off late into production, once the animators have familiarized themselves with the characters’ personalities and body language.
Animator: Sam Wilson · Background animator: Orestis Konstantinidis
Shout-out to SFX specialist Sebastian Pfeiffer, who animated that Scarab controller cable by hand. So smooth!
